Video of the fight–look at that screen! |
The morning after Juan Manuel Marquez scored a stunning sixth-round knockout of Manny Pacquiao– we ( my hubby and 2 kids) went on an excursion to the Disney store and then to lunch. As Bob was bragging about how big the screen on his new Samsung Galaxy phone is…he decided to show me the highlights of the fight. I of course did not watch it because I hate fighting.
Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the sport of boxing. I once did a boxing event with famous trainer and television announcer Teddy Atlas. Though it was an interesting change of pace for me, I wasn’t thrilled with my ring side seat. After a huge blow, blood was splattered all over our table. The sight of the blood made me physically ill and I knew I could never watch (or work) boxing again. Good thing I never went to medical school…
So my husband decided to show Lila the video of the knockout. Great idea honey! I immediately begin thinking…don’t show her violence we don’t want to teach her how to hit! Then I reasoned–well she has seen Tangled 100 times, and has already hit the baby over the head with a frying pan like Rapunzel, so it’s not like she hasn’t seen hitting before…right?
Lila watched for a few seconds as her daddy patiently explained that boxing is a sport, and they wear gloves, and it’s not nice to hit.
Her astute reaction: “Ick, those boys don’t have shirts on.”
